The first things that come to mind for most people when you ask them what there is to do around Orlando are probably the Disney parks, Universal Studios and Sea World, all of which can be very enjoyable, but not necessarily easy on the wallet. Whether you are checking out RTS-Orlando, or you've been here for awhile and your brain is too fried to think of something fun to do to blow off some steam, here are some ideas of cool stuff to do around Orlando that are either cheap/very reasonably priced or free. And by the way, if you have other favorite places to go or cheap date ideas that aren't mentioned here, please email the site administrator and we'll share them on the site.
In Oviedo
Among Oviedo's offerings are the city-owned Oviedo Sports Complex which offers facilities for baseball, softball and archery as well as a playground and the Cross-Seminole
Trail, a great place to bike, hike or rollerblade, with convenient parking in downtown Oviedo near one of the trail heads. For a sweet treat, don't miss the popular Bruster's ice cream stand just around the corner from RTS on Lockwood Blvd.
Get a Taste of Central Florida
Where else can you see the Space Shuttle launch? Find prime off-site viewing locations to see this unique and beautiful spectacle and check the NASA launch schedule to find out when to see the Shuttle or other rockets take off. The nighttime shuttle launches are especially spectacular. Lake Eola Park is the centerpiece of downtown Orlando, has a walking path and swan-shaped paddleboats to rent, and is host to various events and festivals. While you're downtown, be sure to get a taste of Verona, Italy in Orlando at il Gelatone, which serves delicious authentic Italian gelato, and is just half a block from Lake Eola Park. The SAK Comedy Lab is an Orlando tradition. Most (not all) of its shows are 'family friendly' and reasonably priced.
For a taste of Old Florida and the outdoors, drive up to the De Leon Springs State Park with its Eco/History boat tour, or rent a canoe, paddleboat or kayak to explore the waterways and see gators, turtles and wading birds. Enjoy pancakes that you cook at your own table at the historic Old Spanish Sugar Mill, then take a dip in the 72 degree springs/swimming area the mill overlooks. St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city, is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in history and relaxation. Visit the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, peruse the shops in the historic downtown streets, or enjoy the beaches. Speaking of beaches, New Smyrna Beach is also a popular place to go. The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour just off of Park Avenue is an enjoyable tradition. Only blocks away, the Winter
Park Country Club offers a challenging public 9-hole golf course that you can play for a great rate.
